Level 1 Music 2025

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Glen Child.

This is a course designed around the skills of performance, composition, aural, music technology, score reading and musical knowledge.  All styles of music are studied, so students who play, or would like to play any style of music (Contemporary, Rock, Classical, Maori) are welcome in this course.  Knowledge of music theory is not compulsory, but students will be encouraged to develop an understanding of this over the year.  What students will learn:

  • Skills - performing, composing, analysing, listening to and notating music
  • Students will work independently and with others
  • Content - solo and group performance, two compositions, aural transcription, interpreting music score and demonstrating knowledge of the musical elements and features of musical works

ALL Year 10 to Year 13 Music students are required to be taking instrumental and/or voice lessons either at school or with a private teacher outside of school.

FOR YEAR 11 (LEVEL 1) STUDENTS - 2025:

Students will be given the opportunity to sit literacy/numeracy co-requisites from Year 10.

NCEA Level 1 - following the completion of the first year of implementation of the reduced and revised standards, we will evaluate assessments for 2025.

Recommended Prior Learning

Year 10 Music is desirable, but not essential. 

Students are required to play an instrument or sing for individual performance and group performance aspects

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Students also need to have instrumental or voice lessons at school or with a private teacher outside of school.

  • Availability of all courses is subject to student numbers and staffing
  • Some courses will not be available if numbers are too small 
  • Some classes may be combined by Year level (e.g. Year 11 and 12 in one class) if numbers do not make separate classes viable 
  • It may not be possible to accommodate all choices and combinations of subjects 
  • Parents/Caregivers and students need to satisfy themselves that a chosen course meets the student’s goals for the following year and beyond
